Nvidia Shield begins taking preorders for June release

Nvidia’s Android-based portable gaming system, the Shield, is finally taking preorders with a price tag of $349, to be released in June.

Nvidia’s Project Shield, now simply known as Shield, is an Android-based portable gaming system which will be released next month. Pre-orders are now being taken for those who signed up to receive updates on the project from Nvidia, but the public will have to wait until Monday before they can partake.

The Shield debuted at CES this year, and has some interesting features. It’s shaped like a console gaming controller (quite reminiscent of the Xbox controller) and features a 5-inch capacitive touch screen with 1280×720 resolution. The device is capable of running all Google Play apps and can stream full PC games from high-end Nvidia computers over Wi-Fi.

The gaming system also sports a 1.9 GHz Tegra 4 processor with 2GB of RAM and ships with an un-skinned “pure” version of Android 4.2.1, which Nvidia is saying should receive frequent updates. There’s also 16GB of internal storage, mini-HDMI, micro-USB 2.0, a GPS, Bluetooth 3.0 and a microSD card slot to expand storage. Rounding off the features are 802.11n 2×2 MIMO Wi-Fi, integrated speakers and, naturally, a headphone jack.

Pre-ordering will get you the device, a custom lid, cables and 2 games, but if you want to add a carrying case, it’ll cost you $39.99. Custom lids for the device can be added for $19.99 each. All of these however, devices included, are limited to four per customer. Check it out here!
