Bloomberg has an article on the almost silent Nissan Leaf all-electric vehicle.
A major concern is the vehicle’s almost zero noise operation as it may
be potentially dangerous to pedestrians, children and the elderly on
the streets. To address the concern, Nissan shall be equipping the Leaf
with a noise generator. Nissan Motor engineer Toshiyuki Tabata,
Nissan’s noise and vibration expert, leads a 6 member team to recreate
“beautiful” and “artificial” sounds for the EV’s engines. After much
consultation with music composers around the country, they have settled
on “a high- pitched sound reminiscent of the flying cars in Blade
Runner”. For those not in the know, Blade Runner is a 1982 science
flick directed by Ridley Scott portraying a dystopian Los Angeles set
in November 2019. We wouldn’t be surprised if cars can “talk” in the
near future!
