Nintendo won’t be hosting an E3 press conference

Nintendo has announced that it will not be hosting a press conference during the upcoming E3 expo in Los Angeles this June.

Nintendo's president Satoru Iwata recently revealed during an Investor Conference in Japan, that Nintendo won't be participating in the usual press conference war that takes place during the E3 expo. "Unlike previous years, we will not have a large-scale presentation [at E3] directed to everyone in the world.” said Iwata, “Instead, we are planning several smaller events focusing on software for America. Among these hands-on events will be one for American distributors and another for western media.”

While there's no word on why Nintendo is skipping the press conference, one distinct possibility is that they've simply decided not to compete head-on with Sony and Microsoft (both of whom always host press conferences, and are expected to reveal new details on their upcoming consoles at E3).

Iwata did disclose that there will be no new hardware revealed at E3, but the company will showcase a new Mario Kary, Super Mario Bros. as well as reveal Super Smash Bros. WiiU. There's no word on how these games will be demonstrated, but perhaps a smaller press event is likely, or even simply demo booths.

Among other news, Iwata has also announced that he will be assuming the role of CEO of Nintendo of America, while current chairman and CEO Tatsumi Kimishima will be promoted to managing director of Nintendo. Reggie Fils-Aime will retain the position of president and COO while reporting to Iwata. The change in management is an attempt by Nintendo to unify its global strategy.
