Next iPad Air with upgraded processor and cameras reportedly ready for production

Sources for the Korean media suggest the new iPad Air will feature Apple’s new A8 processor and an 8-megapixel camera, while keeping the design of the current model.

The next-generation iPad Air is reportedly ready for production, with display components going into mass production this month, followed by other major parts like the camera and processor.

According to Korean site ETNews, the sixth-generation iPad will have a similar design to the current iPad Air model, including the same 9.7-inch LCD display with a resolution of 2048×1536. LG Display will reportedly begin production on the displays in June, with Samsung and Sharp ramping up production next month.

The next-gen iPad Air will be considerably more efficient thanks to the more advanced A8 processor, which is also expected to power the iPhone 6 and focuses on improving overall performance and battery life. The cameras will also be upgraded – the back camera is said to be getting a boost to an 8-megapixel unit, while a 1.5-megapixel camera will replace the existing 1.2-megapixel sensor on the front.

The report doesn’t mention anything else, but the next-gen iPad Air should also sport a Touch ID fingerprint sensor, which, despite rumors to the contrary, wasn’t a part of the current model. As for the release date, the device will probably launch sometime in September or October as the sole new iPad this year, if reports of Apple postponing a Retina iPad mini upgrade until next year are accurate.
