Microsoft might release OneNote for Mac soon

Even though OneNote is offered for iOS, Microsoft has never before released the app for Mac.

There are already quite a few note-taking applications available for Mac. As Microsoft looks to expand its software presence on Mac, a OneNote app for the platform would make sense.

Several sources claim that Microsoft is working on a OneNote app for Mac. It is possible that the app could come as part of the revamped Office for Mac. The company has already confirmed that development on Office for Mac 2014 is underway and it’s aiming for a release in the next few months. This is going to be the first major update for the suite in over four years, the Mac unit was disbanded after Office for Mac 2011 was released in 2010. Rumor has it that OneNote for Mac might be released prior to the updated suite as a standalone app, if that is true, one can expect the app to drop in the very near future. Sources say that the app is coming “soon.”

The OneNote app is expected to come with a clipper service and Office Lens. Rumor has it that the clipper service will automatically sync saved links between PC and mobile browsers. Office Lens would allow users to tap into the device’s camera for optical character recognition. All snapshots taken would then automatically be uploaded to the cloud. Its possible that Microsoft may also open up OneNote’s programming interface to developers.

It is also rumored that OneNote for Mac will be available for free. Apparently the company is going to release OneNote for desktop Windows as a free app as well. The company is yet to comment on these rumors, so for now, an official release timeframe is not known.
