Mediatek’s MT6859 quad-core chipset models compared

With Mediatek's popular flagship MT6589 quad core chipset having as many as three models, we prepared a short guide to point out the most significant differences between the three.

If you are waiting to buy a new (and cheap) smartphone that you recently saw online and it happens to pack Mediatek's MT6859 chipset, then you've come to the right place. With the fabless company having released as many as three models of the same chipset, it is essential for you to know which one you're getting so that you don't feel cheated on performance (gaming or general) later on.

Comparison with popular SoCs

While we haven't seen any phones packing the MT6589M chipset (which has a 50% slower GPU, support for 720p recording and qHD display resolution only), almost all new budget quad cores (Micromax Canvas HD, Lava Xolo Q series, a ton of Chinese phones, Alcatel One Touch etc.) that cost under $250 pack the original MT6589 chipset.

Mediatek has released the MT6589T (T for Turbo) which is a slightly updated version of their popular chipset. Packing the same internals and feature set as the original chipset, Turbo brings with it a faster CPU (clocked at 1.5 GHz) that should result in faster general computation tasks (barely noticable though). The interesting part is the 25% faster (higher clocked) GPU that should most definitely translate to a smoother gaming experience (especially if the GPU is tasked up to power a 1080p display). So if you're planning to buy a Mediatek quad core powered device, make sure you get the latest (and fastest) model available for the best possible experience.
