LSI Introduces MegaRAID Controllers with PCI Express 3.0 Interface

LSI Logo

In order to answer the "choking" experience its old controllers had while paired with more than couple of Solid State Drives, LSI launched 10 new RAID controller cards and HBA's (High Bandwidth Architecture, for integration on motherboards), all utilizing the PCI Express 3.0 interface.

The popularization of Solid State Storage, i.e. Solid State Drives (SSDs) caught a lot of traditional players off-guard. Even the highest bandwidth RAID solutions would end up choking after more than 4-5 SSD were connected, as it was simply too much bandwidth and more importantly – the number of I/O operations per second.

Couple of months ago, we tested the MegaRAID 9260-8i and 9265-8i and found that both controllers starting experiencing issues after fifth drive would be connected, and that combining an SSD and seven Cheetah 15k7 drives made for the best experience (SSD Caching), or using two SSDs in RAID0 and six 15,000 rpm drives in RAID5.

In order to enable all the bandwidth required by the fast-adopting SSD technology, LSI Corporation revealed no less than 10 MegaRAID SAS+SATA controllers and Host Bus Adapters (HBA) utilizing the PCI Express 3.0. There are seven PCIe cards with 4 or 8 ports, and three HBA chip controllers for motherboard implementation.

Naturally, things are not just about the bandwidth and I/Ops, given that LSI is continuing to support enterprise-grade RAID data protection, SSD caching through CacheCade Pro 2.0 application, CacheVault data protection, packing everything in a new tagline – "intelligent performance". In order to be able to offer the features required, LSI is using the dual-core PowerPC processor operating at 800MHz, with 1GB DDR3 cache memory.
