Intel to announce USB 3.0 support in Cougar Point chipset

While Intel is pretty obsessed with Light Peak, word is that the guys in blue will announce support for USB 3.0 in Cougar Point at the upcoming Intel Developer Forum.

According to an online Chinese language report, Intel will annouce the addition of a USB 3.0 host controller into its Cougar Point reference motherboard design at the Intel Developer Forum 2010.

Intel has been pretty much ‘against’ USB 3.0, but that has not deterred both motherboard manufacturers and notebook makers from integrating USB 3.0 into their wares with third-party controllers. Also, while there were no plans initally to include USB 3.0 in Cougar Point, the last-minute inclusion is probably a knee-jerk reaction to AMD’s progress with integrating USB 3.0 into its upcoming platforms.

Earlier on, AMD was reportedly to be in talks with Renesas Electronics to license its USB 3.0 technology, as the chip maker plans to integrate USB 3.0 into its Hudson D1 southbridge for the ‘Ontario’ Fusion processors, due end of this year. The Llano APU will launch early next year, together with the Hudson D2 and Hudson M3 chipsets – both of which will have native support for USB 3.0 as well.
