Intel’s next-gen Skylake processors aren’t expected to debut before next month but a website has already managed to get their hands on the Core i7-6700K CPU and put it through its paces in its first ‘full review’.
The website tested the Core i7-6700K CPU on the ECS Z170-Claymore motherboard with 16GB 2133 MHz DDR4 RAM, 128GB SSD, and an NVIDIA GeForce GTX 970 graphics card. In order to have an accurate comparison with the Devil’s Canyon i7-4790K processor, the older CPU was tested alongside on a MSI Z97A Gaming 6 motherboard with 8GB 1600 MHz DDR3 RAM and the same SSD and GPU combination as the Skylake system.
Both CPUs were compared using a number of popular benchmarks such as PCMark 8, 3DMark Fire Strike Extreme, Cinebench R15, 3DMark Sky Diver, 3DMark Cloud Gate, and Sandra 2015. As expected, the Skylake CPU isn’t significantly faster than the Haswell i7-4790K, but it does show good gains in quite a few benchmarks. The maximum increase was seen in the Sandra 2015 Multimedia 1 test where it managed to score 29.1% higher. In most other tests, the gap wasn’t really all that high.
