IBM Still Number One in Patents

Now that 2010 is over and done with, would you like to know how your favourite IT-based companies and corporations fared in the field of patent applications?  Well, a company known as IFI Claims has got the latest updated database of patent applications for the previous year, and the results are nothing short of interesting.

According to IFI Claims, a database of U.S patents in the world, a record breaking 219,614 utility patents were issued in 2010, an increase of 31% from 2009.

“The tremendous increase in patent issues in 2010 suggests that so far the economy doesn’t appear to have slowed patent flow significantly in the U.S.,” said Darlene Slaughter, general manager of IFI CLAIMS Patent Services.

International Business Machines (IBM) continues to hold the crown with 5,896 patents, up 20% from 4,914 in 2009. With 5,896 patents under their belt, they have also broken the 5,000 patent mark in a single year, holding on to their number one position for the 18th consecutive year. Samsung was second on the list with 4,551 patents, up 26% compared to 2009; while Microsoft is third with 3,094 patents, up 6.5% compared to 2009.

Other companies that posted double-digit percentage gains in patents from 2009 to 2010 includes:

– Apple, +94%
– Qualcomm, +84%
– NEC, +74%
– SAP, +70
– GM Global Technology, +68%
– Hynix Semiconductor, +65%
– Silverbrook Research, +58%
– 3M Innovative Properties, +53%
– Toyota, +50%
– Brother, +45%
– Hon Hai Precision Industry, +44%

U.S firms captured 50.3% of assigned patents, while Japan, South Korea, Germany and Taiwan were issued 21.3%, 5.4%, 5.2% and 3.8% of the patents respectively.
