HTC’s first octa-core smartphone is the Desire 616

The Desire 616 will be joining HTC’s mid-range lineup as the company’s first smartphone with an eight-core processor ticking away inside.


An octa-core HTC smartphone has been making the rounds in the rumor mills for a few months, and now we can finally put a name on it thanks to certification details found on the handset in China. The Desire 616 is aimed at the Chinese market according to PhoneArena, apparently due to the popularity of octa-core smartphones in the country.

The Desire 616 is powered by a 1.7GHz octa-core MediaTek CPU with 1GB of RAM, likely with the ability to use all eight cores simultaneously. The display is a 5-inch unit of 720p resolution, there’s an 8-megapixel camera on the back, and all this is contained in a body that measures 142 x 71.9 x 9.1 mm and weighs 150 grams. The phone was certified with Android 4.2.2 Jelly Bean, though it will likely be running Android 4.3 upon launch (or at least get an update soon after.)

Color options for the Desire 616 are expected to include black, blue, white, read and yellow. Pricing and release details are currently unknown, though an official announcement should be coming along shortly now that the phone has received the necessary certification. A global launch of the device should follow after it hits store shelves in China, though at this point that’s more a guess rather than a certainty.
