Taiwanese smartphone maker HTC today announced the U11, its latest flagship smartphone. The U11 features a build similar to the U Ultra announced earlier this year, with a very bright “liquid surface” glass back and a metal frame in the middle. Its key USP however, is the new Edge Sense feature that makes the U11 a “squeezable” smartphone – Users can perform functions such as taking a photo or launching apps simply by squeezing on the sides of the U11.
In the hardware department, the HTC U11 is definitely quite competitive against the Samsung Galaxy S8 as it sports a 5.5-inch Super LCD 5 display with Quad HD resolution and 3D Corning Gorilla Glass surface on top. Power comes from Qualcomm’s octa-core Snapdragon 835 chipset clocked at 2.45 GHz with the Adreno 540 GPU. In the US, the U11 will ship with 4GB of LPDDR4 RAM and 64GB of UFS 2.1 storage, while in a few other markets HTC will offer a variant with 6GB of LPDDR4 RAM and 128GB of UFS 2.1 storage. Regardless of the storage onboard, the U11 includes a microSD card slot for expanding the storage by up to 2TB.
The rear camera is a 12MP “UltraPixel 3” unit with optical image stabilization, an f/1.7 aperture lens, and large 1.4 micron sized pixels while on the front HTC continues to delight selfie lovers by using an impressive 16MP snapper, this time with Live Make-up mode. Connectivity features include Wi-Fi 802.11ac dual-band, Bluetooth 4.2 Low Energy, NFC, GPS with A-GPS, GLONASS, USB Type-C port, and LTE Cat.16 (maximum download speeds of up to 1 Gigabit). The battery inside the flagship smartphone is a 3000mAh unit, same as the U Ultra and the HTC 10 from last year. Other key highlights of the new HTC U11 include IP67 certification for water and dust resistance, 3D audio recording with four dedicated microphones, Hi-Res Audio certification, HTC BoomSound Hi-Fi, fingerprint sensor, and USonic USB-C audio with active noise cancellation. The smartphone runs on Android 7.1 Nougat with the HTC Sense overlay on top.
HTC’s new flagship is expected to begin shipping globally by the end of this month in five colors – Brilliant Black, Sapphire Blue, Solar Red, Ice White, and Amazing Silver. While the local pricing hasn’t been confirmed yet, it should be available for approximately US $700.
Update: The HTC U11 will be available in Singapore from 31 May for S$998.
