HP ENVY 14 Spectre Review: Ultrabook with unique glass design

Opening up the HP ENVY 14 Spectre reveals a 14-inch display that supports resolutions of up to 1600×900 pixels, chiclet-style keyboard with backlight, large touchpad with buttons and a spacious glass-layered palm rest. The HP TrueVision HD webcam with integrated digital microphone is at the top of the display. When you first take the Ultrabook out from the box, you will notice the sleek midnight black glass on the exterior. While the glass is scratch resistant and provides some protection to the unit, it unfortunately also doubles as an ugly fingerprint magnet. We wished the manufacturer could include an anti-fingerprint coating, though that might add to the cost of the Ultrabook. It is also not the lightest Ultrabook we have seen, weighing around 1.8kg.

The ENVY 14 Spectre is loaded with ports including two USBs (1x USB 3.0, 1x USB2.0), HDMI output, Ethernet, audio out and SD/MMC memory card reader on the left. On the right of the Ultrabooks holds the volume mute button, the jog dial for volume control, and the power connector. There is no port at the rear or front though. The Beats Audio logo on the right palm rest also lights up in red when the unit is powered on.

The power brick uses a unique connector to the ENVY 14 Spectre and has a USB port for charging your other devices. We removed the base cover and found the 14.8V, 58Wh Lithium-Ion battery which is firmly secured with eight tight screws, and beneath it are two Samsung 64 solid state drives.
