In what must be a huge step in tearing down the communication barriers against us humans and our animal friends, an application that claims to be able to translate the sounds animals make into understandable human words has just been revealed.

The Translate for Animals application, which was built for the Android mobile operating system and is already available on the Android Marketplace, was developed by Google, which “worked closely with many of the world’s top language synthesis teams, and with leaders in the field of animal cognitive linguistics, including senior fellows at the Bodleian Library in Oxford”.

“We are excited to introduce Translate for Animals, an Android application which we hope will allow us to better understand our animal friends. We’ve always been a pet-friendly company at Google, and we hope that Translate for Animals encourages greater interaction and understanding between animal and human,” said Google in its Translate for Animals homepage.

The application works by recognizing and transcribing “words and phrases that are common to a species, like cats for example”.

So, the next time your pet cat/dog/parrot starts making noise when you’re around, don’t be too quick to give it a telling off: it might just be trying to tell you something important.
