Gigabyte GeForce 6600 DDR2 SLI

Let’s zoom in on the cooling mechanics on this Gigabyte nVDIA GeForce 6600
DDR2 and see what makes it so special.

The leaf shaped emblem adds a classy touch to the mundane gold colored
anodized aluminum fins. The heatsink turns out to be a Zalman design, as
indicated on the box.

The mounting springs ensures an even spread of pressure across the graphics
core, as well a a high mounting pressure on the core that is highly important
for efficient heat transfer and minimal thermal resistance.

As many will know, the back of a graphics accelerator gets pretty hot under
load. To make use of the extra surface area for removing heat, Gigabyte/Zalman
has implemented a piece of green anodized aluminum heatsink on the back to cool
the rear of the PCB. Thermal transfer is achieved via a piece of thick thermal

The RAM modules share the same heatsink as the core.

The heat of the die is sinked away by the heatpipe to the heatsink fins on the
front and the rear of the PCB.

The GPU manages a cool 63 degrees in a non air conditioned environment
without any forced air cooling even when we loaded it with RTHDRIBL.

Now we take a peek under the hood (or rather the heatsink) to see what makes
the Gigabyte NVIDIA GeForce 6600 DDR2 tick.
