Geeksphone Peak+ up for pre-order, runs Firefox OS 1.1

Geeksphone’s first consumer Firefox OS smartphone, the Peak+, has been made available for pre-order. The 4.3-inch device runs on Firefox OS 1.1 and sports a dual-core Snapdragon processor.

Spanish manufacturer Geeksphone was one of the first adopters of Mozilla’s HTML5-based Firefox OS, and now the company has announced its first Firefox smartphone that’s aimed at the consumer instead of developers, called the Peak+.

The Peak+ carries the same hardware as the developer-focused Peak, namely a dual-core Snapdragon S4 Plus CPU, 4.3 inch qHD (540 x 960) IPS display, 8-megapixel and 2-megapixel rear and front shooters, 4GB of built-in storage expandable via microSD, Wi-Fi, and a 1,800mAh battery, but doubles the RAM to 1GB and comes with version 1.1 of Firefox OS out of the box, which was recently released and brought faster boot times, improved email and calendar apps, enhanced navigation, and bug fixes.

Awe-inspiring? Certainly not, but combine a lightweight OS and a $197  pre-order price tag with those specs and you certainly get a rather good deal that’s worth checking out if you’re even remotely interested in Firefox OS. Geeksphone didn’t say when the Peak+ will begin shipping, but you can pre-order at the source link right away; better hurry, as starting September 15 that pre-order price will be increased to an undisclosed “standard” price.
