Gamescom: Konami unveils official release date for Castlevania: Lords of Shadow 2

Castlevania Lords of Shadow 2

The definitive Castlevania franchise has come a long way since its 8-Bit days of side-scrolling epicness, The series has amassed a substantial following numbering in the millions, and is complete with numerous titles that culminate in a considerable mythos that incorporates many iconic characters.

The series has changed hands between a number of developers, and the most recent Castlevania games–developed by the esteemed Mercury Steam studios–push the boundaries in terms of innovation and gameplay mechanics. Although the franchise has grown to new heights, it still heralds back to its roots and incorporates those definitive characters of old.

Konami was one of the dozens of publishers that attended this year’s Gamescom convention, and the Japanese publisher unveiled an official release date for the latest chapter in the vampire-slaying franchise–Castlevania: Lords of Shadow 2.

Konami divulged that Lords of Shadow 2 is scheduled for a release on Feb. 25, 2014 in North America and will see a multi-platform launch on PS3, Xbox 360 and PC.

With Lords of Shadow 2, Mercury Steam has taken the development helm once again to deliver a sequel set in an open-world, continuing on the story arc set in place by the previous titles. Gamers will control Dracula in his quest to regain his powers and face the ultimate evil of Satan, while having to face his son Alucard as well as the Belmonts along the way.

Castlevania: Lords of Shadow 2 makes use of a new array of game mechanics including a movable camera as well as an arsenal of new weapons and skills, and takes place in a modern world rather than that of a medieval gothic-style timeframe.

Mercury Steam also completely re-designed the game’s engine in order to build Lords of Shadow 2, fixing many flaws and inconsistencies while streamlining various levels and gameplay mechanics to deliver a fresh, new experience.

Additionally the developers have recently revealed that this is their last title in the Lords of Shadow series–but they might be working on a brand new adventure set in the definitive Castlevania universe.
