Foxconn explains why there’s an iPhone 5 shortage

According to Foxconn, it is quite difficult to make an iPhone 5, or rather it is difficult to please consumers.

Millions of people are lining up to purchase an iPhone 5, but not all have walked away with a shiny new Apple smartphone.  Despite popular demand, Apple (and by extension, Foxconn) has not been able to deliver enough goods to keep iPhone-fanatics happy.

A Foxconn executive has attributed the iPhone 5 shortage to its complicated design and manufacturing process.  According to him, the iPhone5’s “light and thin [design] is very complicated.”

“The iPhone 5 is the most difficult device that Foxconn has ever assembled,” he claims. “It takes time to learn how to make this new device.”

The coating material which the new iPhone uses is very susceptible to scratches, and during the manufacturing process it is very difficult to keep the fresh product from obtaining pre-retail blemishes.

“It’s always hard to satisfy both aesthetic needs and practical needs,” he added.

There’s no denying that Foxconn is running on all cylinders in an effort to keep up with demand for Apple products.  However, the manufacturing giant has also been heavily criticized recently for its employee management system.

A riot not too long ago broke out at one of the Foxconn manufacturing facility in China, and although it is still unclear what the main cause of the riot was, reports have indicated that tension between workers and management arose because Apple had demanded higher product quality control—something the workers felt like they could not meet.
