Firefox OS tablet is a priority, will be arriving ‘ASAP’ according to Mozilla CTO

Mozilla and its partners have indicated that they intend to compete in the smartphone space, but a recent report suggests that Firefox OS tablets are also a high priority.

Smartphone running Firefox OS are low-end devices targeting developing markets, but if the platform proves itself worthy it may become a true contender in other areas as well.  The first Firefox OS smartphone began hitting Spain store shelves this week, and while we still don’t know how well it’ll be received, Mozilla and company are reportedly focusing on tablets, too.

“I’m not going to project when, but I’m going to say we’re moving aggressively and you’ll see things soon,” said Brendan Elch, Mozilla’s CTO.  “We thought ‘tablet should be easier for us,’ but all the inbound interests was in the direction of smartphones.  So we went to smartphones, but we’re going to get tablets ASAP.”

Foxconn, one of the major backers of Firefox OS, plans on hiring 2,000 to 3,000 engineers to support Mozilla in its mobile endeavors.  A prototype Firefox OS tablet was shown off last month, and so we knew that Mozilla was working on tablets, we just didn’t know when we’ll be able to see consumer models.  As Elch mentioned earlier, however, we’ll be seeing these tablets ASAP, because he believes “the web scales better than other graphical UI system.”

No time frame has been released for when a consumer-ready Firefox OS tablet will be released, but if the trend follows that of the Firefox OS smartphones, we can assume that developing markets will be the first to get their hands on the slates.
