Exclusive: Razer Mantis Speed Precision Mousing Surface

While Razer has been putting in lots of attention into rolling out high end mice designed specially for gaming purposes, they have just introduced the Mantis to compliment them. Being Razer’s second mousepad, read on to find out the difference between the oversized Mantis and other premium mousepads in the market!

Razer is a name synonymous with high end gaming peripherals. Being a company
specializing in mice and mousepads for computers, they are in a rather high profile
recently. They have been in the limelight due to the sponsoring of various major
gaming events, like the upcoming Cyberathlete Professional League 2005, and the
World Cyber Games Grand Finals 2005. While we’ve seen some of Razer’s cutting-edge mice, like the Diamondback
Plasma LE
, and the Copperhead,
Razer has recently announced the new Mantis mousepad to compliment these high
end mice.

Gamers has long regarded mousepads as one of the most important gaming gear
in their arsenal. A good gaming grade mouse would go to waste if the gamer
decides to use a poorly constructed mousepad. Due to issues such as grain texture, it may render a premium mouse useless, especially in today’s fast-paced First Person Shooter games. A good population of the gamers today uses
premium grade mousepads, like the wildly popular Func Surface 1030, Razer’s
ExactMat, or even Barracuda’s family of mousepads. While most of these pads
provide a great variety of precision, control or both, most gamers complained that
these mousepads are relatively small in size, when compared to their luxurious
tabletop. Since some gamers prefer a larger tabletop space, they would rather
game without a mousepad.

Razer addresses the size problem directly with the introduction of the
Razer Mantis. The Mantis is an extremely oversized interwoven soft foam-based
mousepad targeted at gamers who desire both large surface area and a
precise control of their mice. While big is an understatement of this 444mm x
355mm mousepad, the individual needs of different different mice are not
ignored. The Mantis comes in 2 different versions, the Mantis Speed, and the
Mantis Control. The Mantis Speed is formulated for higher sensitivity and fast
movements, while the Mantis Control is meant for lower paced games and more precise
control. Also, the Mantis Speed spots a finer surface, while the Control spots
a coarser surface.

Razer incorporates a very interesting tube package design for the
Mantis. You really got to hand it to them when it comes to packaging, Razer has always been top-notch in this area.

Since the Mantis come in 2 different models, it is clearly
stated on the packaging which model it is. The one that arrived in our labs
happens to be the Speed version, intended for fast paced mouse movements.

Here are some product highlights on the Mantis:

1. Precision surface optimised for gaming

2. Speed / Control surface for high / low sensitivity gamers

3. Oversized 444mm x 355mm x 4.3mm design

4. Fibertek cloth weave for superior performance

5. Rubber base ensures grip on the smoothest surfaces

The Razer Mantis Mat is the next generation of precision gaming surfaces created
For Gamers, By Gamers. A premium cloth mouse mat engineered for top of the line
tracking so as to enhance gaming performance. The intricately woven fibers of the
Fibertek surface ensures precise targeting and tracking without limiting the
velocity or acceleration of mousing movements.

That’s how it is marketed in any case! We’ll just have to see how true this is.
