DoCoMo stock rises amid speculation that carrier might start selling the iPhone

Rumor has it that Japan’s largest wireless carrier might start selling the iPhone soon. It is based on this speculation that DoCoMo stock rose in Tokyo trading, while its rivals KDDI and SoftBank fell.

Tomoaki Kawasaki, an analyst at Iwai Cosmo Holdings, believes that speculation regarding DoCoMo finally selling the iPhone is dragging both KDDI and SoftBank down. The carrier’s Chief Financial Officer Kazuto Tsubouchi says that there’s no logical reason for Apple to not allow Japan’s largest wireless carrier to sell the iPhone. DoCoMo wants to be able to sell the most popular handsets, he said, and given the iPhone’s popularity, an agreement between the carrier and Apple might end up being mutually beneficial.

Both KDDI and SoftBank already sell the iPhone in Japan. A spokesman for DoCoMo said that there has been no change in the carrier’s position regarding the iPhone. Tsubouchi said in an interview earlier this month that the carrier might consider changing its position if it can limit the iPhone’s share of sales to less than 30 percent of the company’s total sales. Selling the iPhone might result in growth for the carrier, which is adding new subscribers at a slower pace as compared to its two rivals.

However, it remains to be seen if DoCoMo will receive any one of the two new iPhones Apple is expected to launch next month. The company hasn’t confirmed if it plans on bringing the iPhone to Japan’s largest wireless carrier. If it does intend to do that, we’re likely to hear about it in the near future.
