Desktop HDDs To Be S-ATA By End 2004

Seagate expects a double-sided 120GB HDD to appear by mid 2004, and then a 160GB unit. If the 160GB product is realized, they can make a low-cost one-side disc that has 80GB. They are making R&D efforts in perpendicular recording technology right now, although they won’t see products adopting the technology until quite a bit later. Intel’s new chipset “ICH6,” to be on the market in the middle of next year, will help accelerate the shift to Serial ATA HDDs from parallel ATA. By the end of 2004, shipments of Serial ATA HDDs will surpass those of parallel ATA HDDs.
