Corning has announced that it has found a way to manufacture 3D Gorilla Glass for curved form factors, and will be starting manufacturing later this year.

Corning’s Gorilla Glass is a scratch and damage resistant chemically strengthened glass that lends durability to mobile devices. Considering that most manufactures are readying their wearable offerings, it is no wonder that Corning is looking to build a 3D version of Gorilla Glass that can be used on devices like smartwatches.

Corning mentioned that it is using 3D-forming techniques in making a 3D version of Gorilla Glass, and is working with G-Tech Optoelectronics Corp. out of Taiwan, who will be manufacturing Gorilla Glass parts. With 3D-forming, Corning is looking to achieve uniform consistency of Gorilla Glass over a curved surface, which will be essential in a device with a flexible screen. Samsung and LG have already unveiled mobile devices with curved screens, and the next logical evolution is flexible screens, which will likely be launched sometime later this year.
