Core i5 Microsoft Surface Pro 3 models go on sale, i3 and i7 versions ship August 1

Mere days after discounting second-generation Surface Pros stateside for the first time, Microsoft has officially removed the pre-order tag of a couple of Pro 3 versions, promising to ship the rest of them earlier than planned.

Scouring the online and offline stores for a laptop replacement that can combine the productivity and functionality of a notebook with the portability of a tablet? Then seek no more, as Core i5-powered third-gen Microsoft Surface Pros are starting today officially available for sale.

Given they’ve been on pre-orders for ages, you can imagine there’s a line you need to join, so at least through Microsoftstore.com, the earliest you can get a Surface Pro 3 is June 30. No guarantees things are any different in brick and mortar shops, but they may be worth a shot if you’re desperate enough.

Remember to break the old piggy bank too, as the cheapest 12-inch Windows 8.1 Pro-running slate on sale is a whopping $999. With an Intel Core i5 “Haswell” chip inside and 128 GB solid-state drive. 300 extra bucks doubles the internal storage, keeping processing power in check, whereas i7 flavors begin at $1,549 with a 256 GB SSD.

Sadly, that particular Surface Pro 3 variation only ships “by August 1”, which is actually good news, since MS first issued a “late August” ETA. The top-of-the-line i7-packing 512 GB model is in the same boat, costing $1,949 a pop, and so is the “entry-level” $799 gizmo, which rolls out with a humble Intel Core i3 SoC and 64 GB storage space. Yeah, no way the Surface Pro 2 will sell at $799. You have to do better, Microsoft.
