Canon unveils long-awaited 5D Mark III digital SLR camera

The wait is over. Canon has announced the highly-anticipated EOS 5D Mark III digital SLR camera. At Ion Orchard in Singapore, Canon Singapore unveiled the successor to the 5D Mark II which is targeted at professional and advanced amateur photographers and film makers.

The 22.3-megapixel Canon 5D Mark III features a few improved features including the 36 x 24mm full-frame CMOS sensor, ISO sensitivity of 100 – 25,600 (expandable up to L:50, H1:51,200, new DIGIC 5+ processor, and continuous shooting speeds of up to 6 fps at full resolution. The digital SLR camera is also equipped with new 61-point High Density Reticular AF system (41 cross-types), 63-zone dual layer iFCL metering system, and offers multiple exposures, High Dynamic Range (HDR) and supports CF and SD cards.

You can now compose and track fast moving objects while maintaining focus, thanks to the new AF system. The new AF system lets you achieve fast AF speeds on f/4.0 lenses where it is usually associated with f/2.8 lenses on the EOS 1D Mark IV. The 5D Mark III claims to significantly reduce color artifacts and moiré effect, and it supports Standard Definition to Full High Definition recording (in 30P/25P/24P). It also supports continuous shooting up to a maximum of 30 minutes recording; it will create a new video file once the current file reaches 4GB during shooting. With a 3.2-inch tempered glass LCD II monitor (3:2 aspect ratio), you can frame shots, review images and navigate menus easily.

The Canon EOS 5D Mark III will be available in end March at authorized Canon dealers. Pricing details are not available yet, until closer to retail. Canon has also not confirmed if the 5D Mark III will be showcased or taking pre-orders at the upcoming IT Show 2012.

Andrew Koh, senior director and general manager, Consumer Imaging and Information Division, Canon Singapore, was at the event to introduce the EOS 5D Mark III as well as new EF24mm f/2.8 IS USM, EF28mm f/2.8 IS USM, EF24-70mm f/2.8L II USM lenses, Speedlite 600EX and 600EX-RT, and wireless file transmitter WFT-E7.
