The digital camera market has been in quite a bit of a flux over the last year, especially as advancing technologies have seen mirrorless cameras catch up to and in some cases, surpass the performance of bigger DSLRs. Yet while a number of camera makers such as Fujifilm, Sony, Olympus and Panasonic have fully adopted the Mirrorless format, there’s one camera brand that seems happy to straddle the great divide.
In the past twelve months, Canon, the world’s biggest consumer digital camera manufacturer, has released five DSLR cameras and two Mirrorless camera models in the last twelve months, primarily as their market research has shown that in the European and North American markets DSLRs are still the dominant camera type, while Mirrorless is popular in Asia.
Canon’s two latest DSLR cameras, announced globally on the 29th of June, reinforces the brand’s DSLR lineup with two new cameras – both considered ‘entry-level’ for their tier – the light and trendy EOS 200D for beginner photographers, and the EOS 6D Mark II, a refresh of Canon’s most affordable full-frame DSLR!
Canon EOS 200D
The EOS 200D is Canon’s replacement for the EOS 100D and adds new functionality to a small and light DSLR package, though the slightly redesigned chassis with deep right hand grip makes this camera quite easy to hold for guys with larger hands. Compared to the 100D the 200D has a new 24.2-megapixel APS-C CMOS sensor and Canon’s latest Digic 7 image processor for fast Dual Pixel CMOS autofocus and better 100-12,800 ISO sensitivity, while the vari-angle LCD monitor is now touch screen. Continuous shooting speed is a decent 5fps while videos can be captured at up to Full-HD [email protected] WiFi and NFC connectivity now comes as standard on all Canon DSLRs.
Pricing and availability will be announced at a later date, and in Singapore Canon have decided to opt out of the traditional matt black colour, so the EOS 200D will be available in Trendy White and Sophisticated Silver.
Canon EOS 6D Mark II
It’s been five years since Canon launched the EOS 6D – their most affordable DSLR for amateur photographers who want to step up from APS-C sensors to the larger full-frame. The new EOS 6D Mark II brings a host of updates and refinements yet retains almost the same compact DSLR form factor and weight of the original, which was one of the lightest full-frame cameras of its time.
Now rocking a new 26.2-megapixel full-frame CMOS sensor and Canon’s DIGIC 7 processor, the new 6D Mark II now has Dual Pixel CMOS AF for very fast autofocus with a 45-point all cross-type AF system and a vari-angle touchscreen LCD monitor. To enhance the full-frame photography experience Canon has equipped the EOS 6D Mark II with a 7560 RGB+IR metering sensor and a colour detection AF for more consistent and accurate exposure in challenging light conditions and it can auto detect and prioritise skin tones. Continuous shooting speed is 6.5fps while videos can be captured at up to Full-HD [email protected] resolution.
For flexible connectivity, the EOS 5D Mark II comes with not only WiFi and NFC but also Bluetooth LE to maintain a constant connection with a comparable smart device, and built-in GPS for enhanced image metadata. Pricing and availability of the Canon EOS 6D Mark II will be advised at a later date.
