Budget Bliss – the MSI P6NGM featuring the MCP73PV chipset

You’ve seen the chipset, and you’ve seen the sample board. Now its on the performance tests as we pit the MCP73PV board against a equivalently worthy opponent, the Intel DG33BU board!

Test bed configuration :

  • Intel Core 2 Duo E6550 processor @ 2.33ghz
  • 2 x 512mb E-Devices DDR2-667 (Elpida) @ 5-5-5-15 2T
  • Seagate Barracuda 80GB 7200.7 SATA Hard Drive
  • Verudium Vortex-HE 500W

First up we have 3d mark 06′ , as with all IGP boards they usually have Fantastically slipshod performance in this test – we just ran it for observetory purposes. The Geforce IGP equipped board manages to edge out the Intel G33 board by almost 200 points! Now get this – where there were no anomalies other than the excruciatingly low framerate for the MCP73 board, there WERE instances where textures and shaders were drastically discoloured in the G33’s run. Unlike the Geforce MCP73 IGP, the G33 does not have support for Shader Model 3.0!

The boards fare better in 3d mark 03 , and surprisingly – with the tables turned. Now the G33 chipset is almost 300 points ahead of the MCP73! Quite the equalizer! As 3DMark03 does not utilize SM3.0 and HDR lighting, the G33 is allowed the chance to really shine.

Overall system performance was tested in PC Mark 05′ , and again we have the MCP73 board dishing out major damage to the competition by gaining almost 250 points in the lead! Very surprising for a board equipped only with a single channel memory solution!

Here’s the killer for the MCP73 – the Winrar benchmark bandwidth test. In terms of memory bandwidth it simply cannot keep up with the dual-channel capable G33 board!

As a last ditch effort to test out the differences between the two boards – we’ve thrown in a video playback test for good measure! We slapped in a 720P-quality HD trailer for the upcoming film Alien VS. Predator 2 (Requiem) and monitored the minimum and maximum CPU usage for each board. Rather similar results with the MCP73 board having a slight edge in minimum usage.
