ASUS’s ROG Strix Gaming Laptops Refreshed with Hero II and Scar II

ASUS’s impressive lineup of ROG Strix gaming laptops gets an update that emphasises absolute performance and heat management while throwing in a few proprietary innovations. The Strix Scar II is targetted at FPS gamers who demand the highest in graphics response, while the Strix Hero II is angled toward MOBA players.

The ASUS ROG Strix Scar II and Hero II build on ROG’s design language and styling with bold contrasting colours and a familiar trapezoid-cut lid. ROG Aura Sync makes its presence felt, with lighting effects on the logo on the lid, keyboard and a new lighting bar on the front edge.

Most noticeably, the new Strix laptops feature screen bezels that are 2.33cm narrower than its predecessor, meaning you carry as much screen as the device can house. However, this also means a Dell XPS-styled approach to narrowing bezels, with the front-facing camera on the bottom edge.

The ASUS ROG Strix Scar II and Strix Hero II weigh 2.4kg, a reasonable weight for a gaming laptop.

Their 1080p 15.6-inch screens are the first in the industry to feature both 144Hz refresh rate and a 3ms response time, ahead of the 7ms industry standard at the moment.

Ergonomics are also improved with keyboards that feature a higher actuation point with ROG Overstroke technology, meaning less fatigue even on your next gaming marathon. With n-key rollover, the keyboards on both models also feature unique highlighted keys: QWER on the Hero II for MOBA games, and ASDF on the Scar II for FPS movement.

With eighth-generation Intel Core i7-8750H processors, they are primetime gaming machines. It is 23% more powerful than the previous generation and has Speed Shit and Turbo Boost technologies that help push the processors to speeds of 4GHz and 3.9GHz.

The Hero II is limited to a GTX 1060 GPU, while the Scar II can be upgraded to a GTX 1070. They both have 16GB of DDR4 2666MHz RAM,

Wi-Fi connectivity is greatly enhanced with a set of four antennas located around the screen. They work in conjunction with a unique algorithm to continually utilise the best pair of antennas to ensure connectivity.

The ROG Scar II’s heat management is at the heart of the latest refresh. In order to prevent thermal throttling and heat-induced discomfort, ASUS has implemented several design improvements to address heat dissipation and management.

The ROG Strix Scar II will retail at an MSRP of SGD2,798 and ROG Strix Hero II at SGD2,698. They will be made available at ASUS stores at Sim Lim Square, Causeway Point and Marina Square, and at authorised dealers in Singapore from July onwards.
