Asus Maximus VI Extreme (Z87) Review

Overclocking and Performance:

Since this is a $400 Extreme Overclocking Motherboard we saw it fit to run it under some liquid nitrogen:



The OC Panel is one of the coolest items in the package, other than the board itself, it allows on the fly alteration of settings and is extremely useful for LN2 overclocking since there are no physical buttons on the board. We much prefer this compared to the OC Key that ASUS has on their previous generation Maximus V Extreme as it is easier to use and has an easier learning curve.


Above we are using the OC Panel to check the input voltage. The OC Panel takes almost all the functions including slow mode and power/reset buttons off the board and puts them into your hand so when you do LN2 on the memory you wont need to wipe away frost to find them.

We did some max validations to see how high we could push our hardware. On Z77 we were able to push our 2666C11 4x4GB G.Skill TridentX kit to 2800mhz, however on Haswell we can get close to 3000mhz:



ASUS also put a lot of time into tuning the BCLK, we were able to do 197mhz using the 195mhz profile and going into windows and increasing with the OC Panel:


Our CPU isn’t a 7GHz overclocker, however we were able to pull off a 6.2ghz validation pretty easily without too much harm to the CPU. All we needed was 1.69v:

Next we did a quick run of SuperPI 1M at 5.9ghz:





So here are VR-Zone we don’t believe in running benchmarks on motherboards anymore because so much is integrated into the CPU, if you want to read a review on Haswell performance you can check out some of our articles like this one: 4.6GHz comparison of Ivy Bridge and Haswell . Unless we state otherwise you can expect the motherboard to be up to par in terms of performance, as well test each one and we will only post something if there is an issue in a region. Instead we will provide some I/O benchmarks for Audio and SATA.


The audio results are pretty good, the ALC1150 is a pretty good codec.


Our SATA performance is very good, possibly the one of best we have seen.

I enjoy pony rides and musicals, I also enjoy looking out the window all day into the abyss
