ASUS ROG today announced yet another Intel Z170 Express high-end motherboard for gamers, the ROG Maximus VIII Formula.
The key highlight of the new motherboard is that it integrates a CrossChill EK hybrid cooling block mounted directly to the MOSFET. The block has been created in partnership with EK Water Blocks. With the hybrid cooling block, the new motherboard is claimed to be ‘best in class’ as far as cooling goes. ASUS claims the CrossChill EK hybrid cooling block can help reduce MOSFET temperature by up to 23 degrees Celsius. The standard G1/4 threads mean it is quite easy to add a standard water cooling solution in order to achieve even greater overclocking headroom.
The motherboard also includes integrated Aura RGB LEDs with an extra 4-pin header to add an additional LED strip if you feel the need to. The lighting can be controlled via the Aura lighting control software.
Coming to the motherboard itself, ASUS has included all the features that you would expect from a high-end Z170 Express chipset motherboard. It includes 4 DIMM slots with support for up to 64GB of DDR4 3733 (OC) memory, Intel I219-V Gigabit LAN with ASUS LANGuard, integrated Wi-Fi 802.11ac MU-MIMO dual-band, ROG SupremeFX 2015 onboard audio with ESS ES9023P DAC and a 2VRMS headphone amp, SupremeFX Shielding technology, NVM Express U.2 and M.2 slots, USB 3.1 Type-C, USB 3.1 Type-A, and ROG Armor on the front and back.
There are 2 PCIe 3.0 x16 slots, 1 PCIe 3.0 x16 slot, and 3 PCI 2.0 x1 slots for expansion. For storage connectivity, you get 2 SATA Express ports, 8 SATA 6.0 Gb/s ports, and the aforementioned single U.2 and M.2 slots with NVM Express storage support. The ATX motherboard measures 30.5 x 24.4cm.
