ASUS Crosshair V Formula Preview

AMD's 990FX chipset has finally arrived in the guise of the ASUS Crosshair V Formula. Check inside for more pictures!

The trademark ROG box is hard to miss. Presenting the long awaited AMD 990FX chipset based motherboard, ASUS Crosshair V Formula. This motherboard not only supports the AMD AM3+ FX socket but also the Phenom II, Athlon II, Sempron 100 Series processors. Bulldozer fans will be delighted to know that this motherboard does support the 32nm 8 core beast.

The red/black theme never dies and looks great everytime. We can see distinctively how the theme was implemented here, complementing ROG logo. 


Socket for AMD CPU and four ram slots with support up to 32GB of memory and DDR3 2133MHz. 


It has four PCIe 2.0 x16 slots, capable of running dual GPUs at x16, triple GPUs at x16 x8 x8. One of the PCIe 2.0 x16 is at x4 speed. It also has a single PCIe 2.0 and PCI 2.2 slots. The PCIe 2.0 x16 slots come with a white little lever for easy removal of the PCIe devices.


The ASUS Crosshair V Formula has a total of seven SATA (6Gbps) ports. Six of the SATA ports allow RAID 0, 1, 5 or 10 and are controlled by the SB950 South Bridge. The standalone SATA port shown above is controlled by ASMedia controllers. The ASMedia controllers also have one power eSATA 6Gbps ports found at the rear.

The Crosshair V Formula has the SupremeFX X-Fi 2 built in allowing 8 channel of high definition audio. Other features include EAX Advanced HD 5.0, THX Trustudio PRO, X-Fi Xtreme Fidelity and Creative ALchemy.

The backpanel of this motherboard has plenty of USB 3.0/2.0 ports. To be exact, it has four USB 3.0/2.0 ports controlled by ASMedia controllers and seven USB 2.0/1.1 ports which is controlled by SB950 controller. One of the USB 2.0/1.1 port is reserved for ROG Connect. The Crosshair V Formula also has a PS/2 keyboard/mouse port, S/PDIF Out (optical), a clear CMOS switch and the standard ports for the 8-channel audio. Though, it's a pity that Crosshair V Formula only has a single ethernet gigabit LAN port.
