Apple’s March 2nd media event Roundup


Before the introduction of the iPad 2, Jobs went back to touch on the success of the original iPad. Selling 15 million iPads in 9 months, Jobs claim that Apple has sold more iPads than all the tablet PCs ever sold.

He also had his fun and poked fun at Samsung's Galaxy Tab, quoting Samsung VP Lee Young-hee, only a small sum of the competiting tablet were sold to end users. He then went on to mention that with over 65,000 iPad-specific apps up for users on the App Store, there's only about 100 apps for Android Honeycomb.

A video was then shown to show why Apple feel that 2010 was the year of the iPad, touching on sales and how people have adopted iPad into their daily lives; including doctors, students, pilots and more.

As expected, the iPad 2 was revealed and it features a new A5 chip that is has dual-core processors. The new iPad also features front and rear cameras, built-in gyroscope and a thinner and lighterdesign. Quoting Jobs, "The new iPad 2 is thinner than your iPhone 4."

Cameras work with FaceTime and comes with PhotoBooth for you to take self-portraits.

Available in both black and white at the same time, the 3G model is said to work with both GSM and CDMA networks. Features same battery life as the previous iPad, as well as the same prices across all models.

Apple will start shipping the new iPad in the U.S. from 11th March, and to the following countries on 25th March: Australia, Austria, Belgium, Canada, Czech Republic, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Iceland, Italy, Ireland, Hungary, Japan, Luxembourg, Mexico, Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland and the U.K.

Seems like Singapore won't get it officially till after April or so.

Apple is also going to roll out a HDMI out for the iPad 2, which is essentially a HDMI-to-30-pin iPod connector. Priced at US$39.

Besides that, Apple has a new "cover" for the iPad 2. Available in 5 colours for polyurethane cover, and 5 colours for the leather cover, they are available at US$39 and US$69 respectively. What's interesting is that it can wake the iPad 2 up when you open the case, thanks to the magnets.
