Apple’s App Store reaches 50 billion downloads

Apple is currently celebrating their 50 billionth app download from the App Store. They're also giving a $10,000 gift card to the person who downloaded the 50 billionth app, as well as $500 gift cards for an additional fifty users.

Apple has achieved something pretty significant today.  Their App Store has reached 50 billion downloads. That’s a staggering number considering the App Store was created in 2008, which almost seems further away than it is. Apple was also running a promotion for this event which has been going on for just under two weeks.  They’re offering the individual who downloads the 50 billionth app a $10,000 gift card for the App Store, Mac App Store, or any content from the iTunes store.

If you weren’t lucky enough to be the one winner at the top, they’re also offering 50 other people gift cards that are worth $500, which can certainly buy a lot of things! Apple obviously sees this as a notable occasion, considering they’ve decked out the homepage of their website with the image you see above.

Macrumors points out that it took just under 4 years to reach the first 25 billion downloads, and only 14.5 months to reach the second 25 billion. That rate of growth is astounding, and it will be interesting to see how long it takes to reach the next 25 billion. With the amount of apps in the store considering to rise, and the number of users going up as well, we’re guessing it won’t take long.
