Apple iTunes App Store gets overtaken by Google Play in sheer number of downloads, still ahead in revenue

For years the Apple iTunes App Store has reigned over the app niche. No one could even come close to the amount of apps it hosted or download numbers it boasted. For the first time even, the Google Play Store has overtaken App Store based on number of apps downloaded.

App Annie, a firm that tracks metrics in the app niche, has released its latest download and revenue report. The report reveals that Google Play Store was able to overtake the App Store in app downloads for the very first time in the second quarter of 2013. During the three month period, it is estimated that Google Play saw 10 percent more app downloads as compared to the App Store. The report credits this increase to emerging markets such as India, Brazil and Russia.

Though its not like the App Store has hung up its gloves and left the ring. Apple’s app ecosystem currently generates the most amount of revenue in its niche. That’s true for this particular quarter as well, in which Google Play Store surpassed it in the number of app downloads. The report reveals that the App Store brought in almost 2.3x more revenue in the second quarter of 2013 as compared to Google Play Store. The credit for this has primarily been given to U.S. and Japan which are said to be the two biggest drivers of App Store revenue, combined, they account for over half of all revenues in Q2.

In the smartphone market, there’s a duopoly between Samsung and Apple, with the former’s devices running Android. In the app niche, we see a duopoly of the App Store and Google Play Store. Other platforms have their app markets as well, but none comes close to the number of downloads or revenues both of them generate.
