Android 4.3 security update rolling out to Nexus devices, build JWR66Y

A minor security update has begun rolling out to the Galaxy Nexus, Nexus 4 and Nexus 10 over the air, supposedly to fix the Bitcoin vulnerability that was recently discovered in Google’s mobile OS.

If you were hoping this would be the 4.3.1 update that has to inevitably arrive to fix all the bugs Google introduced in the latest version of Android, then you’ll be disappointed. At 1.8-2 MB, it’s as minor an update as can be, and reports indicate the Nexus 4, Nexus 10, and the Galaxy Nexus are currently seeing a notification for the OTA update, and we can expect to see the Nexus 7 join in on the fun eventually.

The update will increment the build number to JWR66Y, and since T-Mobile officially mentions it to be a security fix, speculation is rife that it could be a fix for the recently discovered Bitcoin vulnerability. However, considering Google simply advised developers to take measures to prevent the vulnerability themselves, it could be something else entirely, which hopefully Google will soon publicly announce.

But then again, we all love updates no matter how minor, so keep hitting that Check now button in the Settings » About » System updates menu on your device. If you’re rocking the yakju variant of the Galaxy Nexus (the one sold in retail outside the Play Store), then you can grab the OTA file from here to manually update.

Any of you already on the JWR66Y build?
