AMD demonstrates 5W C-50 Fusion APU in Asus tablet

While AMD's standard Fusion C-50 APU has a TDP of 9W, AMD and Asus have demonstrated a low power 5W version of the C-50 running in a Windows-based Asus tablet PC. Remarkably, the 5W C-50 is a 1 GHz dual-core, exactly like the 9W C-50, with much the same functionality.


While AMD’s standard Fusion C-50 APU has a TDP of 9W, AMD and Asus have
demonstrated a low power 5W version of the C-50 running in a
Windows-based Asus tablet PC. Remarkably, the 5W C-50 is a 1 GHz
dual-core, exactly like the 9W C-50, with much the same functionality.

The secret behind AMD’s power saving, as revealed by Softpedia, is that some features are disabled which are not relevant for the tablet platform. After all, the Ontario APU was primarily designed for netbooks. Simpler memory controller with limited number of frequencies and terminations, fewer video outputs, fewer ports (such as USB) all lead to a saving of 3W.

The 5W C-50 is a netbook APU optimized for tablets. AMD’s first APU designed for tablets specifically will be Wichita, at 28nm, scheduled to release in early 2012.
