Acer Iconia W3 goes official, the first 8-inch Windows 8 tablet for just $379

After much teasing, Acer has finally gone official with their Iconia W3 Windows 8 tablet, also the world’s first 8-inch tablet running Microsoft’s OS.

About a month ago, we had reported of an 8-inch Acer branded Windows 8 tablet that had popped up on Amazon. Well, the very same tablet is now officially the world’s first 8-inch Windows 8 tablet. Microsoft has finally begun to fulfil their promise of delivering smaller tablets, and it begins with the Acer Iconia W3.

Acer Iconia W3 Specifications:

  • Intel Atom Z2760 1.8 GHz Dual-core Processor
  • 8.1-inch WXGA (1280 x 800) LCD Display
  • 2 MP Front & Rear Cameras
  • 32 GB / 64 GB Internal Storage
  • MicroSD Card Slot (Up To 32 GB)

Look here, the Iconia W3 packs the same features that were mentioned in the rogue Amazon listing. An Intel Atom processor is hardly considered powerful, but of course you weren’t expecting to see a Core i5 here were you? Sadly, the processor is not based on Intel’s new Atom architecture which promises to bring huge performance gains (and the first proper architectural refresh for Atom ever since it was first launched).

Connectivity is taken care by Bluetooth 4.0 and a micro-USB port. A built-in micro-HDMI port ensures minimum effort to mirror your screen on to a larger display. Unlike the larger Windows 8 tablets, the Iconia W3 is lacking USB 3.0 and Thunderbolt ports. Acer has decided to bundle the tablet with the full version of Microsoft Office. An optional full-size keyboard dock can be had for $90.

Acer US confirms that the price of their newest (and arguably cutest) baby will be an affordable $379. While this is still far above the price of a Nexus 7 ($199) and even the iPad Mini for that matter, it’s a step towards providing users with affordable Windows 8 solutions in a small packaging and with a more affordable price tag. Don’t you forget, this is the full x86 version of Windows, so all those programs that you have installed on your desktop/laptop run on the Iconia W3 as well.
