667GB per platter: Western Digital Caviar Green 2TB WD20EARS-00MVWB0

We have the previous WD20EARS-00J2GB0 Caviar Green 2TB on the left, and the WD10EARS-00Y5B1 Caviar Green 1TB on the right.

As mentioned earlier, Western Digital’s two-platter and three-platter drives share the same drive chassis. Hence, you would notice that the Caviar Green 1TB, which uses two 500GB platters, and the new three-platter Caviar Green 2TB (-00MVWB0) have similar looking bases.

Here, we have placed the WD20EARS-00MVWB0 on a digital kitchen scale… While the Green drive isn’t really greens, it still went onto the scale meant for some anyway. The three-platter Caviar Green 2TB weighs 622g.

On the other hand, the two-platter Caviar Green 1TB tips the scale at 589g and the four-platter Caviar Green 2TB (-00J2GB0) at 677g and 735g (-00S8B1).

We have not benchmarked the three-platter Caviar Green 2TB, but results floating on the Web show some pretty good sustained transfer rates. Prices for high capacity drives are decreasing constantly, and are now cheaper than 1TB and 1.5TB drives as well in terms of cost per GB. Perhaps it is great time to add a newer and speedier 2TB to your storage farm?
